The Last Time I Saw You
“The Last Time I Saw You” is a quiet, atmospheric animated short set in the year 2225 — long after rising heat and disease pushed humanity north, leaving entire cities to fall into ruin and overgrowth. In this abandoned world, Romy travels alone through a derelict landscape, carrying a sealed tank whose weight is more than physical. They’re racing against time to return home for a funeral… while avoiding every message left by their sisters. Told through painterly backdrops and expressive, minimalist character animation, the film follows Romy’s emotional journey as their environment reflects their inner state — from suffocating concrete tunnels reclaimed by vines, to washed-out skies that blur the boundary between memory and the present. Each step forward reveals the cost of distance, grief, and unresolved conflict. At its heart, The Last Time I Saw You explores a universal truth: even siblings raised in the same home can carry grief in wildly different ways. Through visual storytelling, layered sound design, and moments of quiet introspection, the film reframes the idea of “paying respects” — asking instead what it means to show up for someone when it matters most. Film Information: • Genre: Animation, Drama • Production Year: 2025 • Country of Production: United Kingdom • Logline: In a derelict future city, Romy embarks on a difficult journey home — burdened by grief, a mysterious tank, and the messages they refuse to answer. • Synopsis: After retrieving a sealed object from an abandoned southern city, Romy travels home determined not to be late for a funeral. Avoiding sleep, conversation, and their sisters’ calls, they navigate a world overtaken by decay and vegetation. As the weight of exhaustion and unresolved emotion builds, Romy confronts the distance they’ve created — and what it means to finally return. Artist / Director Statement: The Last Time I Saw You grew from my fascination with how people respond to grief — particularly siblings who share a childhood yet diverge emotionally when facing loss. I wanted to explore how environments can echo internal turmoil, so I imagined a dystopian world shaped by climate migration: cities once full of life now left behind, reclaimed by intrusive plant life, and haunted by what used to be. Romy’s journey through this landscape mirrors the emotional journey of someone trying to outrun their thoughts. The sound design and music were crafted to express this internal struggle — balancing the stillness of solitary travel with the weight of unanswered voice messages. The result is a film about returning, confronting, and understanding the unpredictable ways people navigate family and sorrow.
